Twisted Impressions #16

In my explorations of pop archaeology sometimes I strike gold, sometimes it's a dud, and sometimes.... well, sometimes I don't know what the hell I've found.  Odd and interesting pictures that really don't belong anywhere, yet still must be shared.

I find that these sorts of images are best tasted without context - it magnifies their strangeness.  I'd rather just show you a picture of a woman in a bikini strangling a mime than attempt to explain it and ruin its mystery.

So buckle up, it's going to be a wild ride.

But don't say you weren't warned...

Note that a lot of these images come from my (now defunct) Retrospace Zeta site - a great place to post stuff like this.

If you have a favorite of these images, let me know.  I'm always interested to hear the views and opinions of my peeps.

There may be a perfectly rational explanation for this woman kicking a giant fake pickle.  But you'll never know.

A lot of my stuff comes from National Lampoon (as above).  Their images are particularly interesting and provoking when separated from their context.  I recently received a couple boxes of Lampoons from a dedicated Retrospacer - there will be cornucopia of Lampoon stuff coming to Retrospace in the not too distant future as I am diligently scanning them.

Dear God, don't ask.  As you probably can gather from my "pancake" posts, I get a lot of my material from vintage erotica.  Say what you will, some of the best and most interesting examples of fashion, decor and overall "seventies-ness" come from these dirty rags.  Many are not from the U.S., so their subject matter and vibe is often.... on the odd side.

A young Andre the Giant

This picture has long been my favorite in terms of "What in the ever lovin' F**K is going on here?"

Yes, this is indeed the fourth picture of a midget with an attractive female... don't judge me.

And what better way to end than with a drunk or stoned Dick Van Dyke.  I told you it would be a strange trip.

  1. Absolutely love this collection, although I did burst out laughing at 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Drunk'...especially the 'fall down in the shower and chip their teeth' part. Too funny!

  2. Perhaps she's attempting to perform a forward flip over the big pickle, still doesn't make it right though...Now if you'll excuse me, I have an overpowering desire to purchase a croquet set(BA-ZOOM!!!!)

  3. As concise a summation of our earth as can be collected.

  4. The mime-strangling bikini chick might be my new favorite, although I'm still drawn to the baby shipped from Family Farms, Ltd. because it's like some great late '60s or early '70s futuristic sci-fi movie, and the design on the box looks kinda like Nazi-ish.

  5. Thank you for Mrs. Fathergill at the top
from "Modesty Blaise". The second movie
of the 60's featuring smiling women using their
legs to kill men. If no one guesses the other, I'll
    add it later....

The second one is "The Million Eyes of Sumuru", a
      true drive-in classic.

  6. The brother in the red leather threads is Isaac Hayes in "Truck Turner" 1974 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072325/

  7. The fist one with the mime is too awesome. I also like the kid in the fridge, croquet, make the boyfriend feel at home, the guys inspecting the lady in stockings, the four-armed commando with the woman tripping him, the giant Muppet with the babes, the flintlock, and Issac Hayes.

  8. I'd sure like to know the story behind the fourth midget photo and the dark haired lovely. I get a German/Scandinavian vibe. Or British--perhaps Masterpiece Theater?

  9. Above Andre the Giant is Sweetums the Muppet, in an off-camera pose from THE MUPPET MOVIE, alongside the extras in the beauty pageant scene where Miss PIggy first lays eyes on Kermit the Frog.

  10. The guys inspecting the lady in stockings...in profile the woman looks very much like a young Barbara Stanwick. She liked playing strong women in saucy roles in those days, but, if it's her, I can't believe the Hollywood censor board would have allowed this scene to appear in a movie.

  11. As to the pic of Dick Van Dyke, he's been very upfront about admitting he went through a bad stretch as an alcoholic in the 60's though the mid 70's. If I remember correctly he even appeared in a movie about the subject later on.

  12. The lady in stockings & guys photo I think is of British origin.

  13. I like the one with Sweetums (The monster Muppet) with the ladies. Now I know why he's called Sweetums!

  14. The photo of the woman with the collar, crown and little else flanked by two guys in satin bomber jackets with a tall robot behind them is from the fabled Turkish version of "Star Wars". There are some clips of it on YouTube.

  15. Knowing that some of these are from National Lampoon actually spoils it. It means it isn't a true WTF image, just an imitation.

  16. The midget in a tux in the second picture, wasn't he in one of the Bond movies? Recall seeing him in some movie.

  17. The couple in the blue circus outfits are from a pancakes movie. I believe that lovely is Ms. Laurie Smith. Contray to looks that is not young Bruce Jenner (now Mr. Kardashian) standing next to her.

  18. Picture above Dick Van Dyke--the guy playing the drum and the woman on the floor.

Among the many, "...what the heck..." questions are, why are women at this gathering? While I have been to a couple of parties like this in my younger days, I never took my girlfriend/wife with me. What the heck?

Ah, the old moneyed elite of Hollywood. I'm not sure what's so remarkable though about the picture of that lovely, young woman playing croquet. Perhaps that was included in error.

Along these same lines though, let's watch a video starring the young Mike Ehrmantraut (from Breaking Bad) as he bravely supports his girlfriend during a trying time.

  20. @King of Jazz: about the fourth midget photo and the dark-haired lovely woman, it is neither German nor Scandinavian: it comes from the notorious italian "Pierino" 70s comedy saga. Pierino (Alvaro Vitali, the "midget" in the photo), is a very naughty and randy schoolboy who always makes saucy jokes or tries to peep at young girls while they're having a shower or take their clothes off. The "Pierino" movies were very successful in Italy during the 70s' , becoming thus a stalwart of italian 'sexy comedy' genre.
