Mini Skirt Monday #111: Retail Minis

Once upon a time, the miniskirt was as commonplace as the local mom and pop shop. But, alas, they're heyday has long since passed. But, unlike the mini, the odds of the mom & pop making a comeback are probably pretty slim.  A great loss to our country IMHO.

Today, we've got a bunch of retail minis - local advertisements (pulled from newspapers and yearbooks), plus non-adverts with just minis amid the splendor of the local biz. Consider this an ode not to just the miniskirt, but also small family owned retail stores. Both were so wonderfully ubiquitous that we didn't know how valuable they were till they were gone.

  1. I've said it before, I'll say it again: The miniskirt is alive and well and has been since the 1980s in Europe, Australia, Japan and, I suspect, the major cities of the U.S. What's going on with the rest of the country?

  4. When I was but a lad, I worked security in a local strip mall. The only highlights there were the Wimpy's hamburger restaurant, and the 30-something wives of two of the store managers. One was a blonde who wore wirerim glasses, and short skirts, and the other was a slim brunette who wore dresses always ending just above the knee. Ah, happy memories.

  5. 42 is an instant classic. The white haired guy (he's their version of Larry Tate) is muttering to the guy next to him something like "jesus, Bill, how'd you like to get her alone in the janitor's closet? I'd show her *my* St. Peter."

The guy in the hat cracks me up though.

  6. I'd quibble with your regret.... The Web has made family or individual businesses much easier to run, with much less overhead and regulatory burden.

They still fail much of the time, but they can now reach a vastly wider clientele through Ebay or Etsy than they ever could through the doorway on Main Street.

  7. In the "ADAM-12" episode "Million Dollar Buff" you will see actress Lindsay Wagner (Bionic Woman) in a minidress and eyeglasses.........HOT!. Adam-12 seasons 1 to 4 are on Hulu. Adam-12 aired from 1968 to 1975. Women in miniskirts can be seen in many episodes.

  8. I'll never thank you enough for all those photos from the time when I was 20!
I'm deeply sure it was *objectively* an unique period of liberation, hope and geniality. All began to crumble (and the skirts increased in length) with the Oil Crisis of 73, and kept going from bad to worse since.

Btw I did not yet peruse your 100+ entries, do you have a reference to Lt. Ellis of UFO? Iconic of that blessed time.
