Magazines #7: 1977 Apartment Life Magazine

Apartment Life Magazine (May 1977)

For my money, no magazine is a better time capsule of 1970s living than Apartment Life. The magazine eventually became Metropolitan Living in 1979; a glossy coffee table magazine with no character. But for a few glorious years in the 70s, Apartment Life perfectly encapsulated the culture, the fashion, the look and the feel of the time.

I've scanned a few pages from the May 1977 issue (and I've posted another issue here), but nothing can take the place of sitting down and reading it. Priceless.

  2. The guy on the bed creeps me out, but we all wanted this stuff back then. I remember that no one...no one...wanted to go to thrift stores then, unless you were dead poor. Funny how things change.

  3. That one guy on his bed has the lady-est lady legs I've ever seen on a man. Was that a '70s thing too?

  4. This mag was my favorite ever! Anyone that loves vintage woulda liked it cuz they always managed to integrate it into at least one spread. I'm old, you can tell...but I was in my twenties when I started subscribing..and I would literally wait for the mailman to come when I knew my new Apt Life would come. Zootsuitmama

    I remember nothing of it.

I am now quite glad about that.

  8. I remember this print! This was my mother’s favorite and she can’t afford a Sunday without this. I remember they covered things about short term apartment rentals, New York housing and fashion scene and even newly-hybrid houses! I love when they talk about New York apartment rental (short term and some rent-to-owns and rent-to-rents).
    Thanks for posting!

  10. Hi, does anybody out there remember an issue of Apartment Life with a great article on Yankee pitcher Ron Guidry and cajun cooking? As a teen-ager, I loved these magazines and spent many a happy hour planning what my apartment would look like, picking the best looks, what plants I would get, OMG....I loved the Yankees dearly (still do) this was my very favorite issue. Does anyone have this issue, may I have the date? There are a bunch of Apartment lifes on eBay currently and I would love to pick it up. Thanks!!!!

  11. I used to LOVE "Apartment Life" magazine! Sure wish they had something like that for today's condos and apartments for people on a shoestring budget.

  12. My friends and I tried making some of the projects from this magazine. It featured items those of us just starting out could afford. This was also during the time when it was COOL to make your own stuff. I still make my own curtains and shower curtains from directions I found in various issues. It was a shame when it became Metropolitan Home because many of us still couldn't afford to achieve those looks yet. Thanks so much for the post.

I loved that magazine. It was awesome things to make for your apartment, party advice, great ideas for making the most of apartment space. I wish that it could be republished today. I loved the furniture and plants and ideas for get togethers with friends. Groovy is the word:)

  15. I'm trying to locate a particular issue of apartment life. It was an issue that talked about entertaining and getting the most out of your apartment. I believe it was 1975. In it was the plans for a great kitchen table on wheels with a stainless or galvanized top and two fold down leaves. It was a great work table that could be used for dinner parties as well. It was painted red and I remember it so clearly because I built it. :-) But had to give e it up. If anyone remembers it and might even have the issue with instructions ~ I'd love to build it again! :-)
