The Match Game 1977 School Riot

Okay kids, prepare for a little history lesson. I'm sure they're teaching you in school all about so-called "important" historical uprisings like The French Revolution, the Boston Tea Party, The Bolshevik Revolution, etc. But have they ever mentioned The Match Game 1977 School Riot? I didn't think so... Here's how it went down.

The question was: "Dumb Dora was so dumb she sent her cultured pearls to BLANK"

The contestant answered "School". When Debralee Scott (from Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman) and Richard Dawson wrote "Finishing School" and the judge wouldn't count them as a match, Debralee and Richard got indignant and the crowd went nuts. Poor Gene Rayburn looked like he needed to lie down and have a nice stiff drink.

  1. That was hilarious! I love it when genuine reality breaks through the scripted "spontenaity".

  2. It is refreshing to see spontenaity on TV. These so-called reality shows are much more scripted than most realize. The Gong Show was the king of totally unscripted mahem.

  3. Do you have these on DVD or what? How do remember such details? I remembered the riot after watching it here, but it wasn't in my frontal lobes or anything. And I really loved Match Game! I loved Gene's yardstick microphone.

  4. Yes I am often told I have a good memory... sometimes I think I do this blog as a way for me to dump or defrag all that stuff taking up space between my ears.

And Gene could be so lecherous with the ladies; I'm sure Freud would have had a field day with his big long microphone.

  7. This was my absolute favorite show growing up. But, I didn't get to see every episode. Don't really remember this one. Question: what was the outcome? Was that judge overruled? Did they throw out the question? Thanks in advance for posting.

  9. I was expecting something more Andy Kaufman/Fridays esque. but still an interesting piece of T.V. history. You can't get this on so called reality t.v.And lest not forget Debralee Scotts contribution to the short lived series Angie.

  10. That was awesome. In all my years of Match Game fandom, I'd never seen that clip before. Richard Dawson was, and still is, the man.

On a side note: Hi God. Please don't take Dick Dawson from us in your current celebrity death marathon. (You've already got Debralee Scott.) Thanks.

  11. To the Editor:

If you have the School Riot, why don't you have this clip for Mini Skirt Monday?
