Vintage Style #3: Those Awful 1970's Basketball Shorts

Very often on Retrospace I whine and complain about how much better it was back in the good ol' days of the 1970's. I'm quick to to point out how superior the music, TV and life in general was in the 70's compared to today.

Well, not this time. When it comes to the basketball uniform, we've definitely made vast improvements. I'm glad to wave goodbye to those tight little short shorts. As I enjoy the NBA playoffs, I am appreciative of the fact that they no longer wear hotpants. As much as I admire Latrell Sprewell, I don't want to see him run around in a pair of Daisy Dukes.

  1. I bet the longer shorts are more comfortable for the players.

  3. John Stockton would approve of this post!

Thank God for the baggy shorts....I shutter the thought of Shaq wearing short shorts.

  4. All I can ask: what were they thinking back then?

  5. I just watched an episode of The Beverly Hillbillies where they get into the jogging craze. Jethro and Mr. Drysdale are wearing shorts tighter and smaller than the ones pictured above. The horror! This image will be permanently burned upon my retina! Thank God for long shorts - as jbfunky pointed out, the image of Shaq with his junk tucked in those tighty whiteys would be a bit unpleasant. I know the original Olympics was in the nude - but the Greeks didn't have NBA players if you get my meaning!

  6. I know what you mean. This is one thing that has been improved over the years.

  7. I'm smiling like the lady in the yellow dress, Gilligan. That's because I like those shorts.

  8. I used to be okay with Stockton's shorts, because he wasn't a big guy and his shorts weren't so tight. But the pic of Issell and Gilmore (classic, BTW!) makes me squirm.

Still--I think some of today's players are wearing pants that are about six sizes too big. I like the longer shorts, but there's got to be a limit. (I'm talking to you, Kobe.)

  9. Well, I think we can all at least agree that the knee-high sock look wasn't a good thing. It was very, very bad. Very bad.

I used to take pride in matching the stripes on my socks to my shirt and/or shorts. It's something I'm not proud of, but I needed to let it out...I feel better now.

  10. My kids mock me when they see how short and tight the shorts were back in the 80's. Those were the standard basketball uniforms. We didn't know any better.

Are you all crazy? The fact that you can see the men of the 70's and 80's in the least amount of cover shows that they and their fans were much more secure in their sexuality than todays culture.
why cover up the human body because of fear? Ask yourself that question, are you afraid to be seen? You were born naked, the Greeks held their games naked, our bodies are beautiful and only ignoramuses are afraid of that fact.

  13. Sure, they looked as if they accidentally left the house in their underwear. But shorts 10 sizes too big are, if anything, even worse. They make grown men look like lesbians. If they want to wear longer shorts, they should be tight enough that they don't flop around, with folds down the side to add flexibility, like the ones some MMA fighters wear.

  16. Every decade has had it own style in fashion and design in general, basketball shorts are not any different... However, the lenght of this "homeboy" look inherited by sports shorts has to go. The look is getting old just as much as the 6" above the ancle-10 size bigger denim shorts". (the gang look)...they also look like women's skirts in dancing with the starts show...

Today's shorts are so big, the men look like they are wearing girl's skirts. LOL

  18. I think that is the point that they look like skirts or culottes. It is just part of the feminization of the American male. Just like shaving all of their body hair. Men are growing up without fathers, and the women are destroying their gender identity. When I am in a group of young people wearing my cowboy cut wrangler jeans, just like I have since childhood, I hear them snickering and trying to ridicule my "package". You would think that the male genitalia is some sort of strange foreign tumor, rather than the very manhood with which every male is born. I am going to wear pants over my nakedness, but I am not going to wear big baggy droopy drawer pants to act as skirts to hide the fact that I am a man. It would be even more misogynistic than if a woman was ashamed of having breasts, and wore some sort of burka tented over her body so that it would completely hide the shape of the female body.

    1. I totally agree. Men are so afraid of wearing facial hair, growing long hair, shaving their "back, sack, and crack.". I'm not doing any of that and I'm not ashamed of it.

  19. the gym shorts of old were the real shorts. the shorts of today look like a dress. the basketball players of today look like Bozzo the clowns running around in those dresses. I'm surprised they don't trip and fall with their long dress like shorts. hey men, do you like wearing long dress shorts. people from the 1800's would laugh at you. clown fashion of today..
